This contribution is a very short excerpt of an extensive matura thesis by Nicole Steck. The original work consists of a careful description of the life and achievements of William Henry Perkin, some background on dyes and color perception, and the work and impressions of a high school student working for the first time in a university laboratory. This excerpt concentrates on two easily repeated pairs of syntheses. The fluorescent compounds are related to optical brighteners. They demonstrate how modifications may be systematically used to change the fluorescence properties of a lead compound.Downloads
