Alfred Werner (1866–1919) is regarded as the founder of coordination chemistry. He was the author of the book entitled 'Neuere Anschauungen auf dem Gebiete der Anorganischen Chemie' (New Perspectives in Inorganic Chemistry) which guided generations of chemists in research and teaching. This book was recently awarded the 'Citation for Chemical Breakthrough' prize from the Division of the History of Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. This article is the first of three dedicated to Werner's life and works.Downloads
