Investigation of the Polychromy of the Virgin with Child of Raron

Abstract

An investigation of the polychromy of the Virgin with Child, dated 1170, from the collection of the Swiss National Museum, was carried out in the laboratory of conservation research at the Swiss National Museum in collaboration with the ETH Zürich.The pigments belonging to the artisan's palette and the painting techniques were studied. In this article we will publish the first results of this research. The samples of polychromy were documented, examined under the microcope, and analysed by means of electron microprobe and Raman microspectrometer.
