The general usefulness of rigid-rod molecules rather than ?-sheets as molecular staves for the construction of artificial ?-barrels with preserved structural and functional plasticity is described. Aspects of the structural plasticity of rigid-rod ?-barrels are elaborated in more detail with respect to barrel truncation, elongation, contraction and expansion in water and/or bilayer membranes.Downloads
