The Swiss chemist and pharmacologist Heinz Liechti is working in Nicaragua for many years. He briefly describes the pharmaceutical industry of this country and the efforts the company SOLKA Laboratories is doing for development. Despite the conditions of scarcity in this third-world country, two analytical methods for drugs are described. The first assay is a quantitative photometric one for clotrimazol in an antimycotic cream, making use of its formation of a cobalt(II) complex, the second one is an application of UV/VIS Higher Order Derivative Spectroscopy (second order HODS) of the quantitative assay for atenolol in an antihypertensive tablet.
