Abstract

10,10-bis(methylthio)nonafulvene (1e) has been prepared by two independent procedures starting from lithium cyclononatetraenide. The title compound is a very reactive yellow oil, the thermal stability of which (τ½ = 24 min. at 10° in d6-acetone) lying between that of nonafulvene (1a) ½ = 12 min. at 10° in CDCl3) and 10,10-bis(dimethylamino)nonafulvene (1d). The structure of (1e) has been proved by spectroscopic methods as well as by cyclisation and oxidation (1e) → (5) → (6). The NMR-spectra as well as the UV-spectrum of 10,10-bis(methylthio)nonafulvene (1e) are discussed.
