Abstract

Since the industrial revolution of the 19th century, due to human activities, increasing amounts of toxic substances are released and may influence in many ways the health of man. Examples show where toxic elements occur in the geological environment and how they can circulate. Discussed are the following examples: burning of fossil fuels, petrol and domestic waste, the use of sewage sludge in agriculture and safe disposal of radioactive waste. Distribution in various geological and other environments and characteristics of substances such as CO2, SO2, HCl, N-oxides, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ba, Cr, Ni, Co and Mo are discussed. Five tables give data on substances found in various environments. In solving such problems interdisciplinary investigations, in which geochemistry may play an important role, are needed.
