Abstract

A first part of this paper deals with recent tendences in the development and production of metallic materials, especially of steels. In connection with the discussion of subsequent steps in the production, which ultimately lead to the as-cast or endstructure it is demonstrated, using some steels as examples, that with high-quality metallic materials the mere chemical composition as it is used today in most cases will not give sufficient information. As a result it becomes evident, that the main aim in the production of metallic materials consists in the reproducible attainment of a necessary structure with the resulting properties within narrow limits. Therefore subsequently all production steps are discussed with regard to structure control of melting, solidification, heat treatment and deformation.
As a consequence of the above-mentioned it is necessary, that a desired structure can be exactly characterized in a quantitative way, this aim being helped by the application of structure-related standards of metallic materials.
