Liquid Crystals are Compounds whose molecules assume an order which lie intermediate between the almost perfect long-range order found in solid crystals and the statistical long-range disorder of an isotropic liquid. Thermotropic liquid Crystals are devided into nematic, cholesteric and smectic phases.
The structure and properties of these phases are described and the effect of molecular structure on their properties is discussed. Different application fields of liquid crystals are reviewed.
