Experience gathered from broad work with capillary columns clearly shows that glass is the most suited raw material for their production. This production should as soon as possible become feasible in the users laboratory as it has been common practice with packed columns for many years. Precondition for this development is a sufficiently simple, universal, and reproducible preparation procedure. We have tried to work out such a procedure; the principles of it are described in this paper. It is based on precipitating a crystal layer of barium carbonate on the glass surface whereby the crystals grow on the solid surface and not in the free liquid. The layer can, by adjusting the concentration of the reagents, serve as a roughened surface to be coated with polar liquids, or as a smooth covering of the silica surface eliminating the adverse catalytical effects of the latter. The primary merits of this procedure are perfect reproducibility, independance of glass variety, and universality of application.
