Abstract

The [Mn(H₂O)₆]²⁺ ion reacts upon oxidation to finely divided solids. Various possible reaction sequences occur, depending on the particular conditions and presence or absence of other ions. These reactions are often directed by the lattice of the initial solid phase, which can be understood in terms of crystal chemistry. The texture and structure, and the morphology, of a given Mn compound may thus help to reconstruct its history.
