3-Aminotoluene-2-sulfonic acid (1) was prepared by the reduction of 3-nitrotoluene-2-sulfonic acid (9). The precursor of 9,3-nitro-toluene-2-sulfonylchloride (5), was synthesized from 2-amino-3-nitrotoluene (6) by two routes: directly, via successive diazotization and reaction with SO2/CuCl2; and indirectly, by diazotization and substitution to 3-nitro-2-thiocyanotoluene (7), followed successively by reductive dimerization to the disulfide 8 and oxidative chlorination.
