Abstract

The formation of hydroxo complexes of iron(III) has been studied by spectrophotometric, potentiometric and voltametric methods and also by measuring the magnetic susceptibility. The hydrolysis constants K11 and β22 have been determined. The magnetic moment of the dimer was found to be 3.66 ± 0.7 BM. For pH between 2- 3 to 3 voltametric method indicates that the polymerised species are reduced at the mercury electrode. Finally the study of hydrolysis as a function of time shows that the ratio of the number of doubly bridged oxo to the number of single oxo bridge decreases with increase in time although the degree of polymerisation increases.
