The stability of the mixed-ligand Cu2+ complexes containing 2,2'-bipyridyl (Bipy) and 1,2-diaminobenzene (Dab), o-aminophenolate (Ap) or pyrocatecholate (Pyr) is compared by determining the constants (I = 0.1, NaClO4; 25°) due to Cu(Bipy)2 + CuL ⇄ 2 Cu(Bipy)L (log X) and Cu(Bipy) + CuL ⇄ Cu(Bipy)L + Cu (Δ log K). The discriminating qualities of Cu(Bipy)2+ are obvious: Cu(Bipy)(Dab)2+, log X = 1.06, Δ log K = -1.18; Cu(Bipy)(Ap)+, log X = 3.14, A log K = −0.31; and Cu(Bipy)(Pyr), log X = 6.15, Δ log K = + 0.43. This discriminating behavior of Cu2+-amine 1:1 complexes is observed only with tert. aromatic-heterocyclic but not with aliphatic amines.
