Bis(benzene)vanadium(0) is metallated by n-butyllithium in the presence of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine. Consecutive reaction with diphenylchlorophosphine yields bis(diphenylphosphino-η-benzene)vanadium(0), [(C6H5)2P—η-C6H5]2 V(0) which represents the first derivative of bis(benzene)vanadium(0) to be obtained via a substitution reaction. The compound is characterized by its ESR- and mass-spectra. In contrast to the isoelectronic complex {[(C6H5)2P—η-C6H5]2Cr(I)}+, the neutral vanadium-complex resists solvolytic cleavage of the C(η-Ar)—P bond.
