Abstract

A simple method for the preparation of idoxanthin (3,3',4'-Trihydroxy-β,β-caroten-4-one), a possible intermediate in the natural transformation of zeaxanthin to astaxanthin, is described.
The relatively stable idoxanthin, prepared in a yield of 30% by oxidation of crustaxanthin (β,β-carotene-3,4,3',4'-tetrol) with CrO3 in graphite, is identified by electron-, mass-, infrared- and proton magnetic resonance spectra.
