Abstract

2-Methyl-l,4-phenanthrenequinone (3) is formed by treatment of (1-acetylnaphth-2-yl)-2'-chloro-allylether (1) or better (in about 60% yield) (1-acetylnaphth-2-yl)-propargylether (2) with sodium methylsulfinylmethide in dimethyl sulfoxide. 3-Methyl-2,5-dihydro-naphth[2,1-b]oxepin-5-one (5) is proposed as an intermediate in this multistep reaction.
