Abstract

Rubber as a material is characterized by a unique combination of physical properties. Along with the development of synthetic rubbers the fundamentals of rubber technology have changed only little. Large areas of rubber technology remain oriented to natural rubber. Monomer and structure of the polymer chain are of deciding importance since properties of the final rubber article and technology leave a narrow margin only. The question of basic raw material of monomer production and of polymerization process determine the course of development. The success of a new synthetic rubber is subject to its processing properties nowadays. In spite of significant progress in the field of rheology processing behavior cannot be predicted exactly by measurement of plain physical data. Processability has to be rated in technical scale experiments using the original equipment of the rubber industry. By this the development of new elastomers becomes expensive and risky.
