Abstract

Diethylenetriamine-N2-acetato-cobalt(II) takes up molecular oxygen in air saturated aequous solution. A dibridged binuclear dioxygen adduct is formed, which in comparison with other O2-complexes of similar structure, exhibits unusual stability. The dissociation to CoII and O2 in acid solution follows the rate law d[O2]/dt = −k[adduct][H+] with k = 50M-1s-1 (20°, 0.2 M NaCl). In neutral or slightly alcaline solution a very slow oxidation (t1/2 ≈ 107s, 20°, pH 9) to CoIII takes place. The structural factors for stability and reactivity are discussed.
