Aspects of the Transition Metal to Carbon σ-bond; Stable Binary Alkyls

The thermal instability of binary transition metal alkyls is a consequence of facile pathways for decomposition, notably the hydride transfer from a β-carbon atom followed by elimination of alkene. Where this reaction is not possible, as in compounds MRn where R = CH3, CH2C6H5, CH2Si(CH3)3 etc., stable alkyls may be synthesised. Examples of the new classes of alkyls, trimethylsilylmethyls and 1-norbornyls are noted and the properties of hexamethyltungsten outlined.
