Abstract

The infrared spectra of the fourteen complex ions [LnT4]- (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Th, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu; T = tropolonate anion) have been determined. One band within the range 480 to 510 cm-1 is found to be significantly metal-sensitive and is accordingly assigned to the metal-oxygen stretching frequency,  ν Ln-O. This assignment is supported by comparison with the spectra of [CuT2] and [ScT3]. ν Ln-O exhibits the double-bumped relationship with 4f-orbital population (with minima at 4f0, 4f7 and 4f14) which is expected in the presence of crystal field stabilization.
