Reaction of substituted diamides of squaric acid with various halogenating agents such as thionyl chloride or carbonyl chloride yields the halogenated compounds 4 ⇄ 5 (X = Cl-), which can be converted to the iminium halides 5a-d by addition of antimony pentachloride. These compounds are strong electrophiles. Their reactions with water, amines and methylen-active compounds are described.
