Abstract

The spectra of molecular ions in crystals depend on the static field on the site occupied by the ions as well as on the dynamic coupling between similar ions. With the sulphate ion as an example it is shown how symmetry considerations form the basis for an interpretation of the crystal spectra of such ions.
