Abstract

Solvent extraction and other two-phase partition techniques are a powerful and convenient method to investigate hydration and solvation phenomena of ionic, molecular and complex species. The possibilities and limitations of these techniques are stressed. In particular the hydration and solvation of some mineral and complex metal acids in various solvent extraction systems are discussed. It is shown that the structural arrangement of the ionic hydration shell has a definite influence on the distribution properties of the solvated species and on their tendency to form complexes or ion associates in the aqueous and organic phase.
