Heptafulven und Sesquifulvalen

Abstract

A synthesis of heptafulvene (4) and sesquifulvalene (6) is reported : Acetoxy-tropylium-fluoroborate (2) reacts easily with methyl-lithium and sodium-cyclopentadienide to give the acetoxymethyl-cycloheptatrienes (3) and the acetoxy-cyclopenta-dienylcycloheptatrienes (5) respectively. Gas-phase pyrolysis of (3) and (5) affords in remarkably good yields heptafulvene (4) and sesquifulvalene (6), which are isolated in cristalline form at low temperatures. Spectroscopic evidence of the title compounds is presented.
