Abstract

The reaction 4 HI + O2 2 H2O + I2 has been studied as a possibility of regeneration of the cathodic fuel in a cell using the cathodic reaction I2 + 2 e- → 2 I-. The influence on the rate of reaction of the following factors has been quantitatively investigated:

- iodide, oxygen, and acid concentrations,

- light intensity,

- ratio surface / volume of the cylindrical reactor

An equation allowing the computation of the rate of iodine formation under various conditions is proposed. – Wave length of the incident light and temperature are other parameters influencing the rate of oxydation.
