Abstract

A kinetic study on the autoxidation of cuprous copper in aqueous CH3CN or Cl- allows the determination of the hitherto unknown 1:1-complexes CuCH3CN+ and CuClaq. Their existence is difficult to prove by equilibrium measurements because of the wellknown tendency of Cu+aq to disproportionation. Use is made of the fact that Cu+aq only is active towards oxygen whereas all the other species present in solution have no significant autoxidation rate. This kinetic method should be applicable to many other systems.
