Quaternary fluorides of the formula type LiMeIIMeIIIF6 (MeII = Mg, Ni, Co, Zn; MeIII = Ga, V, Cr, Fe) cristallize in the tetragonal trirutile type. Against that LiCuCrF6 has the mono-rutile structure. The formation of solid solutions rutile- trirutile is observed by exploring the system ZnF2–LiZnCrF6 as example.
LiMnCrF6 crystallizes in the Na2SiF6-structure, space group P321 with a = 8,654 Å and c = 4,731 Å. Larger MeII-ions (Ca, Sr and Cd) form another hexagonal structure, probably the K2MnF6-type, space group P63mc.
In the compounds LiMeIIMeIIIF6 containing one paramagnetic cation (Co, Ni) only small deviations from normal paramagnetism are observed, whereas compounds with two paramagnetic cations MeII and MeIII show stronger antiferromagnetic coupling.
The reflection spectrum of Cr3+-ions in CrF3 and in some ternary and quaternary fluorides is surveyed and discussed.
