When working with cyanacetamide, the usual method of catalytic dehydration of amides to give the corresponding nitriles is unsatisfactory. In this particular case the high temperature and the presence of ammonia causes decomposition to occur. This can be overcome by passing cyanacetamide vapour at < 5 Torr over silicaphosphate catalyst at 350 to 400 °C in the absence of ammonia to produce malonodinitrile. However more recent work shows that triethylphosphate can be used advantageously for the same purpose at 700 °C.
