Glucose-labeled steryl glycoside (0.5 mc/mM) has been obtained biosynthetically by incubation of a lettuce (Lactuca saliva L.) leaf particulate fraction with UDP-glucose-14C. When dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide and incubated with the same particulate fraction, steryl 14C-glucoside (SG) was found to be converted by acylation to esterified steryl 14C-glucoside (ESG). The identity of ESG has been confirmed by deacylation and by recrystallization of the deacylated product with carrier steryl glycoside to constant specific activity. This experiment demonstrates the biosynthesis of ESG in plants by acylation of SG.
