The properties of plastics can be improved by a surface treatment. A number of known methods for the modification of the surface characteristics of polyethylene are discussed: heat treatment, chemical oxidation, Corona-discharge, electronic gun and crosslinking by peroxides.
The surface fluorination of polyethylene foils has been studied. The degree of fluorination could be followed by comparison of IR-diagrams. It was found that UV-radiation and a higher temperature increase the formation of fluorine radicals and could thus be used to accelerate fluorination. However, because of the thermoplasticity of the polyethylene the temperature can be increased within certain limits only. An increase of the intensity of the irradiation is thus the only practical way for achieving industrially interesting fluorination times.
